A file's parent folder cannot be created

Folder cannot be created download error

A file’s parent folder cannot be created.

Applicable systems: Windows desktop client

Description

A folder that has been shared with you cannot be created on your local desktop system.  Either the folder name is too long or it has invalid characters in the folder name.

These errors occur because Windows has character length limits for a folder name or limits on the allowable characters in a Windows folder name. It's possible to trigger this issue when a computer synchronizes to a folder with a long folder name.  For example, if the online folder was uploaded from another system running MacOS or Linux, the folder name may be invalid on Windows.

Possible remedies

  1. If you have a long folder name, rename to a shorter name.
  2. Check your folder name for special characters, such as: / ? < > \ : * | " and any character you can type with the Ctrl key and rename your file.  Go to My Syncplicity and check the folder name. Illegal characters in a path name can occur if a Mac user uploads a file with a name valid on Mac but invalid on Windows.  If necessary, contact the file owner and have the file renamed to remove the character.
