• Introduced support for Device Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) feature. When Device Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) is enabled, Syncplicity will assess new device login attempts and can require users to first verify and confirm a device, before they can use it to access their account. • Fixed an issue, where video files in Syncdrive syncpoint cannot be opened with Windows Media Player.

Windows Client 6.3.0

New in this release

• New "Convert Local Syncplicity folders to SyncDrive" option is added in Syncplicity Settings > Storage > On Device screen. With this option you can easily free up space from this device, by moving local folders to cloud (SyncDrive) folders.

Bug fixes

Windows Client 6.2

New in this release

• As a Syncplicity end-user, you can lock files to temporarily shield them from other users. Once you lock a file, your changes are saved in the next version of the file. Other users are notified that you are working on the locked file. For more details see File locking on Windows desktop.
• Support has been added for Share Naming Convention Policy for SyncDrive. Users can discover the owner of a specific shared folder in Windows File Explorer as part of the folder name in parentheses.

Improved in this release

There are the following user experience improvements:

• Favorite action name is changed to Make available offline.
• Sync now and Stop synchronization action names are changed to Add to this device and Remove from this device.
• Sync later action name is changed to Keep in cloud only.

Bug fixes

• Fixed an issue where in rare cases AutoCad (.dwg) files were not not shown in SyncDrive after update.
• Fixed an issue where folders could not be fully synchronize due to folder name being checked against File Type Exclusion Policy.
• Fixed rare issue where large PPTX files were corrupted when multiple people were editing and saving at the same time.

Known issue

If a folder enters syncing state while one or more files are locked, the syncing operation cannot complete. The folder remains in this state until the files are unlocked. This is expected behavior and you can ignore it, as the remaining unlocked files in the folder are synchronized accordingly. When the locked files are unlocked, Syncplicity synchronizes them and the folder exits the syncing state.

Windows Client 4.1.1

This release allows IT Admins to prevent users from choosing download locations for folders shared with them. Some companies have workflows that require specific folder locations, and this optional Windows Registry key lets companies maintain control over folder structures.

The Windows Registry key setting prevents users from changing the download path in the following dialogs:

• Initial registration dialog
• Sync All Folders dialog
• New syncpoint dialog
• Manage Folders dialog

Other bug fixes:

• When working with StorageVault Authentication (SVA) folders, upload requests now include the User-Agent header, to avoid 401 Unauthorized HTML responses that could prompt users for unnecessary logins.
• The Exclude File window no longer hides behind the current Windows Explorer window.

Windows Client 4.1.0

This major release features the Syncplicity App Tab, a collaboration feature that works with desktop versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, from Office 2007 onward.

When you use Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint to open a file inside a synced folder, the Syncplicity App Tab displays. The App Tab helps you avoid accidental file conflicts when collaborating on shared files, with visible notifications when a file’s status changes. Popup notifications display directly inside Microsoft Office when other people view a file that you are also viewing, when someone else starts editing that file, or when a newer version of that file becomes available.

Known Issues:

• In version 4.1.0 this feature is Windows-only, but we will be bringing it to other platforms. If you collaborate with others on shared files and they save changes on Macintosh, iOS or Android, you will get a notification on Windows when their changes are available. But you will only get notified that other people are currently viewing or editing if they are using Windows.
• Microsoft automatically saves file changes to their legacy PPT and XLS formats as soon as a different user opens the file. This triggers an instant file update and can create multiple file conflicts, as automatic updates get batted back and forth like a ball at a tennis match. Syncplicity recommends you avoid using these legacy file formats for real-time collaboration and instead use the PPTX and XLSX formats, which have been the default formats for PowerPoint and Excel beginning with Office 2007.
• If the person who submitted a file update is unknown, their name will show as “?” in the notification popup. This can happen if your network connection is unavailable when the other person saves their file. This does not affect syncing; it only prevents the display of the other person’s name.

Technical Info:

• The App Tab communicates over industry-standard WebSocket connections. If your company’s network infrastructure blocks WebSocket connections, the App Tab will not function properly.
• The event server used by the App Tab communicates over this secure URL, which must be allowed through your network: https://event.syncplicity.com

Anatomy of the App Tab

The App Tab displays inside Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint when you open a file in a synced folder.

By default, the App Tab displays in the middle of the right edge of your document window, but you can drag it anywhere along the left or right side of your Microsoft Office application. The color and icon of the App Tab will change based on the state of the document. Whenever the state changes (for instance, when someone else starts editing that document), the larger popup window will briefly display to show you the status. You can also click on the App Tab at any point to check on the status of your document.

The notification window contains three sections, as shown above:

• The Info section displays the current status message regarding your file, and when the file was last updated. It also contains quick access to online Help.
• The People section shows you others that are actively viewing or editing the same file (with pictures if they have associated a Gravatar icon with their Syncplicity account email address). The People section will also let you switch to a newer version of the file, if someone else saves changes.
• The Settings section contains a Browse to My Syncplicity link, which will open My Syncplicity in your default browser directly to the location of the file, so you can access version history. A settings menu contains options to prevent popup notifications for advanced users, or even hide the entire App Tab. Of course, if you hide the App Tab entirely, you won’t know when other users are editing shared files. If you choose this option, you can re-enable the App Tab from the Syncplicity Settings dialog, which is accessible from the Windows taskbar.

A Quick Feature Tour of the App Tab

The App Tab works with any number of people viewing and editing the same file. In this guide, we’ll pretend that you and a coworker named Doug are working on a shared file.

Here, the App Tab shows that you are the only person viewing this file:

When someone else opens the same file, the App Tab shows a notification:

If you start making edits, your App Tab changes to a pencil icon to indicate that you changed the file:

And if someone else starts editing first, the App Tab will notify you with a lock icon, suggesting that you wait before making changes:

You can choose to wait until the other person saves their changes. Or you can both edit the file if you really need to. In that case, you will both get a warning that if you both save changes, you will create multiple conflicting versions of the file:

As with previous versions of Syncplicity, it’s not harmful to create conflicting versions, but it can be confusing to have extra conflict files show up in your shared folders. So the App Tab gives you the information you need to avoid creating these extra files by accident.

When someone else saves their changes, Syncplicity will sync the file as it normally does. The App Tab will let you know whenever a new version is ready. Simply click “Switch to this version” and your file will be updated to the newest available version:

Ah, you say, what if your colleague saves a new version while you are editing a previous version? No problem! If you have unsaved changes, and someone else saves a new version, the App Tab will offer to save your changes separately so no information is lost:

One more neat feature to mention: clicking “Browse to My Syncplicity” will open your browser to My Syncplicity, directly to the location of the file you’re editing! This will let you easily browse or restore other versions or branches of your file.

Windows Client 4.0.0

This is a major “4.0” release for Syncplicity! Internal changes in this release have been planned for several years, and set the stage for some great features we will be rolling out later this year. Companies can deploy a mix of old desktop clients with new desktop clients (on different computers, of course!), but there are plenty of changes to enjoy, and good reasons to upgrade.

• Recently-changed files will download first. Even if you are downloading a huge folder for the first time, Syncplicity will retrieve the most-recent files first, including changes made in a different sync folder while you’re in the middle of a sync. This is a huge improvement that will help you get your current and most important files quickly.
• Empty folders now sync, to help project teams set up folder structures before adding data. Create all the empty folders you want, and we’ll happily sync them!
• File and folder exclusions are handled more smoothly. If you re-include a folder or an entire file type that you had previously excluded, Syncplicity will start syncing those files again.
• The desktop client has improved handling of interruptions and corrupt files.
• We have made other improvements to the way downloads work, including:
  • Deleting or updating a file while downloading a version of the same file works more smoothly and quickly
  • Improved user experience and user feedback when downloading files
  • Fewer pauses during downloading
  • Major improvement to reporting sync status
  • Faster downloads and uploads
  • Less CPU intensive for most sync cases
• Windows only: The Send Logs command in the Settings screen now includes the Syncplicity database to help us diagnose difficult problems. The database contains more information about files, but no file content. Please make sure that you are comfortable with sending us this information when working with Support cases.
• Known Issues:
  • The first time you launch the 4.x desktop client, the application will spend some extra time preparing to sync. For a huge amount of files or a slow computer, this could take several minutes. This is not a bug: the application is looking across your existing sync folders to make sure there are no problems.
  • After installing the 4.x desktop client, downgrading to an older 3.x client on the same computer is not recommended, and may require a very long initial sync.

Windows Client 3.5.25 Hotfix

• Fixed a folder permissions issue in the previous release that prevented Windows from indexing files in Syncplicity folders.
• User permissions for Syncplicity folders are now set to the same permissions settings as your user profile folder.
• For users with standard permissions settings, this means that guest users or other users on your computer will be unable to see your Syncplicity folders unless you explicitly share with them.
• If you later change the permissions for a Syncplicity sync folder on your computer, Syncplicity will not make other changes to that folder’s permissions settings.
• The installer will now correctly exit Syncplicity before installing the new version.
• Fixed an issue preventing upgrade if the default Syncplicity Folders had been deleted.
• Fixed an issue that led to multiple Syncplicity.exe tasks running at the same time.

Known issue

If a folder enters syncing state while one or more files are locked, the syncing operation cannot complete. The folder remains in this state until the files are unlocked. This is expected behavior and you can ignore it, as the remaining unlocked files in the folder are synchronized accordingly. When the locked files are unlocked, Syncplicity synchronizes them and the folder exits the syncing state.

Windows Client 4.1.0

This major release features the Syncplicity App Tab, a collaboration feature that works with desktop versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, from Office 2007 onward.

When you use Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint to open a file inside a synced folder, the Syncplicity App Tab displays. The App Tab helps you avoid accidental file conflicts when collaborating on shared files, with visible notifications when a file’s status changes. Popup notifications display directly inside Microsoft Office when other people view a file that you are also viewing, when someone else starts editing that file, or when a newer version of that file becomes available.

Known Issues:

• In version 4.1.0 this feature is Windows-only, but we will be bringing it to other platforms. If you collaborate with others on shared files and they save changes on Macintosh, iOS or Android, you will get a notification on Windows when their changes are available. But you will only get notified that other people are currently viewing or editing if they are using Windows.
• Microsoft automatically saves file changes to their legacy PPT and XLS formats as soon as a different user opens the file. This triggers an instant file update and can create multiple file conflicts, as automatic updates get batted back and forth like a ball at a tennis match. Syncplicity recommends you avoid using these legacy file formats for real-time collaboration and instead use the PPTX and XLSX formats, which have been the default formats for PowerPoint and Excel beginning with Office 2007.
• If the person who submitted a file update is unknown, their name will show as “?” in the notification popup. This can happen if your network connection is unavailable when the other person saves their file. This does not affect syncing; it only prevents the display of the other person’s name.

Technical Info:

• The App Tab communicates over industry-standard WebSocket connections. If your company’s network infrastructure blocks WebSocket connections, the App Tab will not function properly.
• The event server used by the App Tab communicates over this secure URL, which must be allowed through your network: https://event.syncplicity.com

Anatomy of the App Tab

The App Tab displays inside Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint when you open a file in a synced folder.

By default, the App Tab displays in the middle of the right edge of your document window, but you can drag it anywhere along the left or right side of your Microsoft Office application. The color and icon of the App Tab will change based on the state of the document. Whenever the state changes (for instance, when someone else starts editing that document), the larger popup window will briefly display to show you the status. You can also click on the App Tab at any point to check on the status of your document.

The notification window contains three sections, as shown above:

• The Info section displays the current status message regarding your file, and when the file was last updated. It also contains quick access to online Help.
• The People section shows you others that are actively viewing or editing the same file (with pictures if they have associated a Gravatar icon with their Syncplicity account email address). The People section will also let you switch to a newer version of the file, if someone else saves changes.
• The Settings section contains a Browse to My Syncplicity link, which will open My Syncplicity in your default browser directly to the location of the file, so you can access version history. A settings menu contains options to prevent popup notifications for advanced users, or even hide the entire App Tab. Of course, if you hide the App Tab entirely, you won’t know when other users are editing shared files. If you choose this option, you can re-enable the App Tab from the Syncplicity Settings dialog, which is accessible from the Windows taskbar.

A Quick Feature Tour of the App Tab

The App Tab works with any number of people viewing and editing the same file. In this guide, we’ll pretend that you and a coworker named Doug are working on a shared file.

Here, the App Tab shows that you are the only person viewing this file:

When someone else opens the same file, the App Tab shows a notification:

If you start making edits, your App Tab changes to a pencil icon to indicate that you changed the file:

And if someone else starts editing first, the App Tab will notify you with a lock icon, suggesting that you wait before making changes:

You can choose to wait until the other person saves their changes. Or you can both edit the file if you really need to. In that case, you will both get a warning that if you both save changes, you will create multiple conflicting versions of the file:

As with previous versions of Syncplicity, it’s not harmful to create conflicting versions, but it can be confusing to have extra conflict files show up in your shared folders. So the App Tab gives you the information you need to avoid creating these extra files by accident.

When someone else saves their changes, Syncplicity will sync the file as it normally does. The App Tab will let you know whenever a new version is ready. Simply click “Switch to this version” and your file will be updated to the newest available version:

Ah, you say, what if your colleague saves a new version while you are editing a previous version? No problem! If you have unsaved changes, and someone else saves a new version, the App Tab will offer to save your changes separately so no information is lost:

One more neat feature to mention: clicking “Browse to My Syncplicity” will open your browser to My Syncplicity, directly to the location of the file you’re editing! This will let you easily browse or restore other versions or branches of your file.

Windows Client 4.0.0

This is a major “4.0” release for Syncplicity! Internal changes in this release have been planned for several years, and set the stage for some great features we will be rolling out later this year. Companies can deploy a mix of old desktop clients with new desktop clients (on different computers, of course!), but there are plenty of changes to enjoy, and good reasons to upgrade.

• Recently-changed files will download first. Even if you are downloading a huge folder for the first time, Syncplicity will retrieve the most-recent files first, including changes made in a different sync folder while you’re in the middle of a sync. This is a huge improvement that will help you get your current and most important files quickly.
• Empty folders now sync, to help project teams set up folder structures before adding data. Create all the empty folders you want, and we’ll happily sync them!
• File and folder exclusions are handled more smoothly. If you re-include a folder or an entire file type that you had previously excluded, Syncplicity will start syncing those files again.
• The desktop client has improved handling of interruptions and corrupt files.
• We have made other improvements to the way downloads work, including:
  • Deleting or updating a file while downloading a version of the same file works more smoothly and quickly
  • Improved user experience and user feedback when downloading files
  • Fewer pauses during downloading
  • Major improvement to reporting sync status
  • Faster downloads and uploads
  • Less CPU intensive for most sync cases
• Windows only: The Send Logs command in the Settings screen now includes the Syncplicity database to help us diagnose difficult problems. The database contains more information about files, but no file content. Please make sure that you are comfortable with sending us this information when working with Support cases.
• Known Issues:
  • The first time you launch the 4.x desktop client, the application will spend some extra time preparing to sync. For a huge amount of files or a slow computer, this could take several minutes. This is not a bug: the application is looking across your existing sync folders to make sure there are no problems.
  • After installing the 4.x desktop client, downgrading to an older 3.x client on the same computer is not recommended, and may require a very long initial sync.

Windows Client 3.5.25 Hotfix

• Fixed a folder permissions issue in the previous release that prevented Windows from indexing files in Syncplicity folders.

Windows Client 4.1.0

This major release features the Syncplicity App Tab, a collaboration feature that works with desktop versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, from Office 2007 onward.

When you use Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint to open a file inside a synced folder, the Syncplicity App Tab displays. The App Tab helps you avoid accidental file conflicts when collaborating on shared files, with visible notifications when a file’s status changes. Popup notifications display directly inside Microsoft Office when other people view a file that you are also viewing, when someone else starts editing that file, or when a newer version of that file becomes available.

Known Issues:

• In version 4.1.0 this feature is Windows-only, but we will be bringing it to other platforms. If you collaborate with others on shared files and they save changes on Macintosh, iOS or Android, you will get a notification on Windows when their changes are available. But you will only get notified that other people are currently viewing or editing if they are using Windows.
• Microsoft automatically saves file changes to their legacy PPT and XLS formats as soon as a different user opens the file. This triggers an instant file update and can create multiple file conflicts, as automatic updates get batted back and forth like a ball at a tennis match. Syncplicity recommends you avoid using these legacy file formats for real-time collaboration and instead use the PPTX and XLSX formats, which have been the default formats for PowerPoint and Excel beginning with Office 2007.
• If the person who submitted a file update is unknown, their name will show as “?” in the notification popup. This can happen if your network connection is unavailable when the other person saves their file. This does not affect syncing; it only prevents the display of the other person’s name.

Technical Info:

• The App Tab communicates over industry-standard WebSocket connections. If your company’s network infrastructure blocks WebSocket connections, the App Tab will not function properly.
• The event server used by the App Tab communicates over this secure URL, which must be allowed through your network: https://event.syncplicity.com

Anatomy of the App Tab

The App Tab displays inside Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint when you open a file in a synced folder.

By default, the App Tab displays in the middle of the right edge of your document window, but you can drag it anywhere along the left or right side of your Microsoft Office application. The color and icon of the App Tab will change based on the state of the document. Whenever the state changes (for instance, when someone else starts editing that document), the larger popup window will briefly display to show you the status. You can also click on the App Tab at any point to check on the status of your document.

The notification window contains three sections, as shown above:

• The Info section displays the current status message regarding your file, and when the file was last updated. It also contains quick access to online Help.
• The People section shows you others that are actively viewing or editing the same file (with pictures if they have associated a Gravatar icon with their Syncplicity account email address). The People section will also let you switch to a newer version of the file, if someone else saves changes.
• The Settings section contains a Browse to My Syncplicity link, which will open My Syncplicity in your default browser directly to the location of the file, so you can access version history. A settings menu contains options to prevent popup notifications for advanced users, or even hide the entire App Tab. Of course, if you hide the App Tab entirely, you won’t know when other users are editing shared files. If you choose this option, you can re-enable the App Tab from the Syncplicity Settings dialog, which is accessible from the Windows taskbar.

A Quick Feature Tour of the App Tab

The App Tab works with any number of people viewing and editing the same file. In this guide, we’ll pretend that you and a coworker named Doug are working on a shared file.

Here, the App Tab shows that you are the only person viewing this file:

When someone else opens the same file, the App Tab shows a notification:

If you start making edits, your App Tab changes to a pencil icon to indicate that you changed the file:

And if someone else starts editing first, the App Tab will notify you with a lock icon, suggesting that you wait before making changes:

You can choose to wait until the other person saves their changes. Or you can both edit the file if you really need to. In that case, you will both get a warning that if you both save changes, you will create multiple conflicting versions of the file:

As with previous versions of Syncplicity, it’s not harmful to create conflicting versions, but it can be confusing to have extra conflict files show up in your shared folders. So the App Tab gives you the information you need to avoid creating these extra files by accident.

When someone else saves their changes, Syncplicity will sync the file as it normally does. The App Tab will let you know whenever a new version is ready. Simply click “Switch to this version” and your file will be updated to the newest available version:

Ah, you say, what if your colleague saves a new version while you are editing a previous version? No problem! If you have unsaved changes, and someone else saves a new version, the App Tab will offer to save your changes separately so no information is lost:

One more neat feature to mention: clicking “Browse to My Syncplicity” will open your browser to My Syncplicity, directly to the location of the file you’re editing! This will let you easily browse or restore other versions or branches of your file.

Windows Client 4.0.0

This is a major “4.0” release for Syncplicity! Internal changes in this release have been planned for several years, and set the stage for some great features we will be rolling out later this year. Companies can deploy a mix of old desktop clients with new desktop clients (on different computers, of course!), but there are plenty of changes to enjoy, and good reasons to upgrade.

• Recently-changed files will download first. Even if you are downloading a huge folder for the first time, Syncplicity will retrieve the most-recent files first, including changes made in a different sync folder while you’re in the middle of a sync. This is a huge improvement that will help you get your current and most important files quickly.
• Empty folders now sync, to help project teams set up folder structures before adding data. Create all the empty folders you want, and we’ll happily sync them!
• File and folder exclusions are handled more smoothly. If you re-include a folder or an entire file type that you had previously excluded, Syncplicity will start syncing those files again.
• The desktop client has improved handling of interruptions and corrupt files.
• We have made other improvements to the way downloads work, including:
  • Deleting or updating a file while downloading a version of the same file works more smoothly and quickly
  • Improved user experience and user feedback when downloading files
  • Fewer pauses during downloading
  • Major improvement to reporting sync status
  • Faster downloads and uploads
  • Less CPU intensive for most sync cases
• Windows only: The Send Logs command in the Settings screen now includes the Syncplicity database to help us diagnose difficult problems. The database contains more information about files, but no file content. Please make sure that you are comfortable with sending us this information when working with Support cases.
• Known Issues:
  • The first time you launch the 4.x desktop client, the application will spend some extra time preparing to sync. For a huge amount of files or a slow computer, this could take several minutes. This is not a bug: the application is looking across your existing sync folders to make sure there are no problems.
  • After installing the 4.x desktop client, downgrading to an older 3.x client on the same computer is not recommended, and may require a very long initial sync.

Windows Client 3.5.25 Hotfix

• Fixed a folder permissions issue in the previous release that prevented Windows from indexing files in Syncplicity folders.
• User permissions for Syncplicity folders are now set to the same permissions settings as your user profile folder.
• For users with standard permissions settings, this means that guest users or other users on your computer will be unable to see your Syncplicity folders unless you explicitly share with them.

When the locked files are unlocked, Syncplicity synchronizes them and the folder exits the syncing state.

The App Tab helps you avoid accidental file conflicts when collaborating on shared files, with visible notifications when a file’s status changes. Popup notifications display directly inside Microsoft Office when other people view a file that you are also viewing, when someone else starts editing that file, or when a newer version of that file becomes available.

Known Issues:

• In version 4.1.0 this feature is Windows-only, but we will be bringing it to other platforms. If you collaborate with others on shared files and they save changes on Macintosh, iOS or Android, you will get a notification on Windows when their changes are available. But you will only get notified that other people are currently viewing or editing if they are using Windows.
• Microsoft automatically saves file changes to their legacy PPT and XLS formats as soon as a different user opens the file. This triggers an instant file update and can create multiple file conflicts, as automatic updates get batted back and forth like a ball at a tennis match. Syncplicity recommends you avoid using these legacy file formats for real-time collaboration and instead use the PPTX and XLSX formats, which have been the default formats for PowerPoint and Excel beginning with Office 2007.
• If the person who submitted a file update is unknown, their name will show as “?” in the notification popup. This can happen if your network connection is unavailable when the other person saves their file. This does not affect syncing; it only prevents the display of the other person’s name.

Technical Info:

• The App Tab communicates over industry-standard WebSocket connections. If your company’s network infrastructure blocks WebSocket connections, the App Tab will not function properly.
• The event server used by the App Tab communicates over this secure URL, which must be allowed through your network: https://event.syncplicity.com

Anatomy of the App Tab

The App Tab displays inside Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint when you open a file in a synced folder.

By default, the App Tab displays in the middle of the right edge of your document window, but you can drag it anywhere along the left or right side of your Microsoft Office application. The color and icon of the App Tab will change based on the state of the document. Whenever the state changes (for instance, when someone else starts editing that document), the larger popup window will briefly display to show you the status. You can also click on the App Tab at any point to check on the status of your document.

The notification window contains three sections, as shown above:

• The Info section displays the current status message regarding your file, and when the file was last updated. It also contains quick access to online Help.
• The People section shows you others that are actively viewing or editing the same file (with pictures if they have associated a Gravatar icon with their Syncplicity account email address). The People section will also let you switch to a newer version of the file, if someone else saves changes.
• The Settings section contains a Browse to My Syncplicity link, which will open My Syncplicity in your default browser directly to the location of the file, so you can access version history. A settings menu contains options to prevent popup notifications for advanced users, or even hide the entire App Tab. Of course, if you hide the App Tab entirely, you won’t know when other users are editing shared files. If you choose this option, you can re-enable the App Tab from the Syncplicity Settings dialog, which is accessible from the Windows taskbar.

A Quick Feature Tour of the App Tab

The App Tab works with any number of people viewing and editing the same file. In this guide, we’ll pretend that you and a coworker named Doug are working on a shared file.

Here, the App Tab shows that you are the only person viewing this file:

When someone else opens the same file, the App Tab shows a notification:

If you start making edits, your App Tab changes to a pencil icon to indicate that you changed the file:

And if someone else starts editing first, the App Tab will notify you with a lock icon, suggesting that you wait before making changes:

You can choose to wait until the other person saves their changes. Or you can both edit the file if you really need to. In that case, you will both get a warning that if you both save changes, you will create multiple conflicting versions of the file:

As with previous versions of Syncplicity, it’s not harmful to create conflicting versions, but it can be confusing to have extra conflict files show up in your shared folders. So the App Tab gives you the information you need to avoid creating these extra files by accident.

When someone else saves their changes, Syncplicity will sync the file as it normally does. The App Tab will let you know whenever a new version is ready. Simply click “Switch to this version” and your file will be updated to the newest available version:

Ah, you say, what if your colleague saves a new version while you are editing a previous version? No problem! If you have unsaved changes, and someone else saves a new version, the App Tab will offer to save your changes separately so no information is lost:

One more neat feature to mention: clicking “Browse to My Syncplicity” will open your browser to My Syncplicity, directly to the location of the file you’re editing! This will let you easily browse or restore other versions or branches of your file.

Windows Client 4.0.0

This is a major “4.0” release for Syncplicity! Internal changes in this release have been planned for several years, and set the stage for some great features we will be rolling out later this year. Companies can deploy a mix of old desktop clients with new desktop clients (on different computers, of course!), but there are plenty of changes to enjoy, and good reasons to upgrade.

• Recently-changed files will download first. Even if you are downloading a huge folder for the first time, Syncplicity will retrieve the most-recent files first, including changes made in a different sync folder while you’re in the middle of a sync. This is a huge improvement that will help you get your current and most important files quickly.
• Empty folders now sync, to help project teams set up folder structures before adding data. Create all the empty folders you want, and we’ll happily sync them!
• File and folder exclusions are handled more smoothly. If you re-include a folder or an entire file type that you had previously excluded, Syncplicity will start syncing those files again.
• The desktop client has improved handling of interruptions and corrupt files.
• We have made other improvements to the way downloads work, including:
  • Deleting or updating a file while downloading a version of the same file works more smoothly and quickly
  • Improved user experience and user feedback when downloading files
  • Fewer pauses during downloading
  • Major improvement to reporting sync status
  • Faster downloads and uploads
  • Less CPU intensive for most sync cases
• Windows only: The Send Logs command in the Settings screen now includes the Syncplicity database to help us diagnose difficult problems. The database contains more information about files, but no file content. Please make sure that you are comfortable with sending us this information when working with Support cases.
• Known Issues:
  • The first time you launch the 4.x desktop client, the application will spend some extra time preparing to sync. For a huge amount of files or a slow computer, this could take several minutes. This is not a bug: the application is looking across your existing sync folders to make sure there are no problems.
  • After installing the 4.x desktop client, downgrading to an older 3.x client on the same computer is not recommended, and may require a very long initial sync.

Windows Client 3.5.25 Hotfix

• Fixed a folder permissions issue in the previous release that prevented Windows from indexing files in Syncplicity folders.
• User permissions for Syncplicity folders are now set to the same permissions settings as your user profile folder.

When the locked files are unlocked, Syncplicity synchronizes them and the folder exits the syncing state.

As with previous versions of Syncplicity, it’s not harmful to create conflicting versions, but it can be confusing to have extra conflict files show up in your shared folders. So the App Tab gives you the information you need to avoid creating these extra files by accident.

When someone else saves their changes, Syncplicity will sync the file as it normally does. The App Tab will let you know whenever a new version is ready. Simply click “Switch to this version” and your file will be updated to the newest available version:

Ah, you say, what if your colleague saves a new version while you are editing a previous version? No problem! If you have unsaved changes, and someone else saves a new version, the App Tab will offer to save your changes separately so no information is lost:

One more neat feature to mention: clicking “Browse to My Syncplicity” will open your browser to My Syncplicity, directly to the location of the file you’re editing! This will let you easily browse or restore other versions or branches of your file.

Windows Client 4.0.0

This is a major “4.0” release for Syncplicity! Internal changes in this release have been planned for several years, and set the stage for some great features we will be rolling out later this year. Companies can deploy a mix of old desktop clients with new desktop clients (on different computers, of course!), but there are plenty of changes to enjoy, and good reasons to upgrade.

• Recently-changed files will download first. Even if you are downloading a huge folder for the first time, Syncplicity will retrieve the most-recent files first, including changes made in a different sync folder while you’re in the middle of a sync. This is a huge improvement that will help you get your current and most important files quickly.
• Empty folders now sync, to help project teams set up folder structures before adding data. Create all the empty folders you want, and we’ll happily sync them!
• File and folder exclusions are handled more smoothly. If you re-include a folder or an entire file type that you had previously excluded, Syncplicity will start syncing those files again.
• The desktop client has improved handling of interruptions and corrupt files.
• We have made other improvements to the way downloads work, including:
  • Deleting or updating a file while downloading a version of the same file works more smoothly and quickly
  • Improved user experience and user feedback when downloading files
  • Fewer pauses during downloading
  • Major improvement to reporting sync status
  • Faster downloads and uploads
  • Less CPU intensive for most sync cases
• Windows only: The Send Logs command in the Settings screen now includes the Syncplicity database to help us diagnose difficult problems. The database contains more information about files, but no file content. Please make sure that you are comfortable with sending us this information when working with Support cases.
• Known Issues:
  • The first time you launch the 4.x desktop client, the application will spend some extra time preparing to sync. For a huge amount of files or a slow computer, this could take several minutes. This is not a bug: the application is looking across your existing sync folders to make sure there are no problems.
  • After installing the 4.x desktop client, downgrading to an older 3.x client on the same computer is not recommended, and may require a very long initial sync.

Known issue

If a folder enters syncing state while one or more files are locked, the syncing operation cannot complete. The folder remains in this state until the files are unlocked. This is expected behavior and you can ignore it, as the remaining unlocked files in the folder are synchronized accordingly. When the locked files are unlocked, Syncplicity synchronizes them and the folder exits the syncing state.

Windows Client 4.1.0

This major release features the Syncplicity App Tab, a collaboration feature that works with desktop versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, from Office 2007 onward.

When you use Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint to open a file inside a synced folder, the Syncplicity App Tab displays. The App Tab helps you avoid accidental file conflicts when collaborating on shared files, with visible notifications when a file’s status changes. Popup notifications display directly inside Microsoft Office when other people view a file that you are also viewing, when someone else starts editing that file, or when a newer version of that file becomes available.

Known Issues:

• In version 4.1.0 this feature is Windows-only, but we will be bringing it to other platforms. If you collaborate with others on shared files and they save changes on Macintosh, iOS or Android, you will get a notification on Windows when their changes are available. But you will only get notified that other people are currently viewing or editing if they are using Windows.
• Microsoft automatically saves file changes to their legacy PPT and XLS formats as soon as a different user opens the file. This triggers an instant file update and can create multiple file conflicts, as automatic updates get batted back and forth like a ball at a tennis match. Syncplicity recommends you avoid using these legacy file formats for real-time collaboration and instead use the PPTX and XLSX formats, which have been the default formats for PowerPoint and Excel beginning with Office 2007.
• If the person who submitted a file update is unknown, their name will show as “?” in the notification popup. This can happen if your network connection is unavailable when the other person saves their file. This does not affect syncing; it only prevents the display of the other person’s name.

Technical Info:

• The App Tab communicates over industry-standard WebSocket connections. If your company’s network infrastructure blocks WebSocket connections, the App Tab will not function properly.
• The event server used by the App Tab communicates over this secure URL, which must be allowed through your network: https://event.syncplicity.com

Anatomy of the App Tab

The App Tab displays inside Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint when you open a file in a synced folder.

By default, the App Tab displays in the middle of the right edge of your document window, but you can drag it anywhere along the left or right side of your Microsoft Office application. The color and icon of the App Tab will change based on the state of the document. Whenever the state changes (for instance, when someone else starts editing that document), the larger popup window will briefly display to show you the status. You can also click on the App Tab at any point to check on the status of your document.

The notification window contains three sections, as shown above:

• The Info section displays the current status message regarding your file, and when the file was last updated. It also contains quick access to online Help.
• The People section shows you others that are actively viewing or editing the same file (with pictures if they have associated a Gravatar icon with their Syncplicity account email address). The People section will also let you switch to a newer version of the file, if someone else saves changes.
• The Settings section contains a Browse to My Syncplicity link, which will open My Syncplicity in your default browser directly to the location of the file, so you can access version history. A settings menu contains options to prevent popup notifications for advanced users, or even hide the entire App Tab. Of course, if you hide the App Tab entirely, you won’t know when other users are editing shared files. If you choose this option, you can re-enable the App Tab from the Syncplicity Settings dialog, which is accessible from the Windows taskbar.

A Quick Feature Tour of the App Tab

The App Tab works with any number of people viewing and editing the same file. In this guide, we’ll pretend that you and a coworker named Doug are working on a shared file.

Here, the App Tab shows that you are the only person viewing this file:

When someone else opens the same file, the App Tab shows a notification:

If you start making edits, your App Tab changes to a pencil icon to indicate that you changed the file:

And if someone else starts editing first, the App Tab will notify you with a lock icon, suggesting that you wait before making changes:

Known issue

If a folder enters syncing state while one or more files are locked, the syncing operation cannot complete. The folder remains in this state until the files are unlocked. This is expected behavior and you can ignore it, as the remaining unlocked files in the folder are synchronized accordingly. When the locked files are unlocked, Syncplicity synchronizes them and the folder exits the syncing state.

Windows Client 4.1.0

This major release features the Syncplicity App Tab, a collaboration feature that works with desktop versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, from Office 2007 onward.

When you use Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint to open a file inside a synced folder, the Syncplicity App Tab displays. The App Tab helps you avoid accidental file conflicts when collaborating on shared files, with visible notifications when a file’s status changes. Popup notifications display directly inside Microsoft Office when other people view a file that you are also viewing, when someone else starts editing that file, or when a newer version of that file becomes available.

Known Issues:

• In version 4.1.0 this feature is Windows-only, but we will be bringing it to other platforms. If you collaborate with others on shared files and they save changes on Macintosh, iOS or Android, you will get a notification on Windows when their changes are available. But you will only get notified that other people are currently viewing or editing if they are using Windows.
• Microsoft automatically saves file changes to their legacy PPT and XLS formats as soon as a different user opens the file. This triggers an instant file update and can create multiple file conflicts, as automatic updates get batted back and forth like a ball at a tennis match. Syncplicity recommends you avoid using these legacy file formats for real-time collaboration and instead use the PPTX and XLSX formats, which have been the default formats for PowerPoint and Excel beginning with Office 2007.
• If the person who submitted a file update is unknown, their name will show as “?” in the notification popup. This can happen if your network connection is unavailable when the other person saves their file. This does not affect syncing; it only prevents the display of the other person’s name.

Technical Info:

• The App Tab communicates over industry-standard WebSocket connections. If your company’s network infrastructure blocks WebSocket connections, the App Tab will not function properly.
• The event server used by the App Tab communicates over this secure URL, which must be allowed through your network: https://event.syncplicity.com

Anatomy of the App Tab

The App Tab displays inside Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint when you open a file in a synced folder.

By default, the App Tab displays in the middle of the right edge of your document window, but you can drag it anywhere along the left or right side of your Microsoft Office application. The color and icon of the App Tab will change based on the state of the document. Whenever the state changes (for instance, when someone else starts editing that document), the larger popup window will briefly display to show you the status. You can also click on the App Tab at any point to check on the status of your document.

The notification window contains three sections, as shown above:

• The Info section displays the current status message regarding your file, and when the file was last updated. It also contains quick access to online Help.
• The People section shows you others that are actively viewing or editing the same file (with pictures if they have associated a Gravatar icon with their Syncplicity account email address). The People section will also let you switch to a newer version of the file, if someone else saves changes.
• The Settings section contains a Browse to My Syncplicity link, which will open My Syncplicity in your default browser directly to the location of the file, so you can access version history. A settings menu contains options to prevent popup notifications for advanced users, or even hide the entire App Tab. Of course, if you hide the App Tab entirely, you won’t know when other users are editing shared files. If you choose this option, you can re-enable the App Tab from the Syncplicity Settings dialog, which is accessible from the Windows taskbar.

A Quick Feature Tour of the App Tab

The App Tab works with any number of people viewing and editing the same file. In this guide, we’ll pretend that you and a coworker named Doug are working on a shared file.

Here, the App Tab shows that you are the only person viewing this file:

When someone else opens the same file, the App Tab shows a notification:

If you start making edits, your App Tab changes to a pencil icon to indicate that you changed the file:

And if someone else starts editing first, the App Tab will notify you with a lock icon, suggesting that you wait before making changes:

You can choose to wait until the other person saves their changes. Or you can both edit the file if you really need to. In that case, you will both get a warning that if you both save changes, you will create multiple conflicting versions of the file:

As with previous versions of Syncplicity, it’s not harmful to create conflicting versions, but it can be confusing to have extra conflict files show up in your shared folders. So the App Tab gives you the information you need to avoid creating these extra files by accident.

When someone else saves their changes, Syncplicity will sync the file as it normally does. The App Tab will let you know whenever a new version is ready. Simply click “Switch to this version” and your file will be updated to the newest available version:

Ah, you say, what if your colleague saves a new version while you are editing a previous version? No problem! If you have unsaved changes, and someone else saves a new version, the App Tab will offer to save your changes separately so no information is lost:

One more neat feature to mention: clicking “Browse to My Syncplicity” will open your browser to My Syncplicity, directly to the location of the file you’re editing! This will let you easily browse or restore other versions or branches of your file.

Windows Client 4.0.0

This is a major “4.0” release for Syncplicity! Internal changes in this release have been planned for several years, and set the stage for some great features we will be rolling out later this year. Companies can deploy a mix of old desktop clients with new desktop clients (on different computers, of course!), but there are plenty of changes to enjoy, and good reasons to upgrade.

• Recently-changed files will download first. Even if you are downloading a huge folder for the first time, Syncplicity will retrieve the most-recent files first, including changes made in a different sync folder while you’re in the middle of a sync. This is a huge improvement that will help you get your current and most important files quickly.
• Empty folders now sync, to help project teams set up folder structures before adding data. Create all the empty folders you want, and we’ll happily sync them!
• File and folder exclusions are handled more smoothly. If you re-include a folder or an entire file type that you had previously excluded, Syncplicity will start syncing those files again.
• The desktop client has improved handling of interruptions and corrupt files.
• We have made other improvements to the way downloads work, including:
  • Deleting or updating a file while downloading a version of the same file works more smoothly and quickly
  • Improved user experience and user feedback when downloading files
  • Fewer pauses during downloading
  • Major improvement to reporting sync status
  • Faster downloads and uploads
  • Less CPU intensive for most sync cases
• Windows only: The Send Logs command in the Settings screen now includes the Syncplicity database to help us diagnose difficult problems. The database contains more information about files, but no file content. Please make sure that you are comfortable with sending us this information when working with Support cases.
• Known Issues:
  • The first time you launch the 4.x desktop client, the application will spend some extra time preparing to sync. For a huge amount of files or a slow computer, this could take several minutes. This is not a bug: the application is looking across your existing sync folders to make sure there are no problems.
  • After installing the 4.x desktop client, downgrading to an older 3.x client on the same computer is not recommended, and may require a very long initial sync.

Windows Client 3.5.25 Hotfix

• Fixed a folder permissions issue in the previous release that prevented Windows from indexing files in Syncplicity folders.
• User permissions for Syncplicity folders are now set to the same permissions settings as your user profile folder.

• As a Syncplicity end-user, you can lock files to temporarily shield them from other users. Once you lock a file, your changes are saved in the next version of the file. Other users are notified that you are working on the locked file. For more details see File locking on Windows desktop.
• Support has been added for Share Naming Convention Policy for SyncDrive. Users can discover the owner of a specific shared folder in Windows File Explorer as part of the folder name in parentheses.

Known issue

If a folder enters syncing state while one or more files are locked, the syncing operation cannot complete. The folder remains in this state until the files are unlocked. This is expected behavior and you can ignore it, as the remaining unlocked files in the folder are synchronized accordingly. When the locked files are unlocked, Syncplicity synchronizes them and the folder exits the syncing state.

This release allows IT Admins to prevent users from choosing download locations for folders shared with them. Some companies have workflows that require specific folder locations, and this optional Windows Registry key lets companies maintain control over folder structures.

The Windows Registry key setting prevents users from changing the download path in the following dialogs:

Windows Client 4.1.0

This major release features the Syncplicity App Tab, a collaboration feature that works with desktop versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, from Office 2007 onward.

When you use Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint to open a file inside a synced folder, the Syncplicity App Tab displays. The App Tab helps you avoid accidental file conflicts when collaborating on shared files, with visible notifications when a file’s status changes. Popup notifications display directly inside Microsoft Office when other people view a file that you are also viewing, when someone else starts editing that file, or when a newer version of that file becomes available.

Known Issues:

• In version 4.1.0 this feature is Windows-only, but we will be bringing it to other platforms. If you collaborate with others on shared files and they save changes on Macintosh, iOS or Android, you will get a notification on Windows when their changes are available. But you will only get notified that other people are currently viewing or editing if they are using Windows.
• Microsoft automatically saves file changes to their legacy PPT and XLS formats as soon as a different user opens the file. This triggers an instant file update and can create multiple file conflicts, as automatic updates get batted back and forth like a ball at a tennis match. Syncplicity recommends you avoid using these legacy file formats for real-time collaboration and instead use the PPTX and XLSX formats, which have been the default formats for PowerPoint and Excel beginning with Office 2007.
• If the person who submitted a file update is unknown, their name will show as “?” in the notification popup. This can happen if your network connection is unavailable when the other person saves their file. This does not affect syncing; it only prevents the display of the other person’s name.

Technical Info:

• The App Tab communicates over industry-standard WebSocket connections. If your company’s network infrastructure blocks WebSocket connections, the App Tab will not function properly.
• The event server used by the App Tab communicates over this secure URL, which must be allowed through your network: https://event.syncplicity.com

Anatomy of the App Tab

The App Tab displays inside Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint when you open a file in a synced folder.

By default, the App Tab displays in the middle of the right edge of your document window, but you can drag it anywhere along the left or right side of your Microsoft Office application. The color and icon of the App Tab will change based on the state of the document. Whenever the state changes (for instance, when someone else starts editing that document), the larger popup window will briefly display to show you the status. You can also click on the App Tab at any point to check on the status of your document.

The notification window contains three sections, as shown above:

• The Info section displays the current status message regarding your file, and when the file was last updated. It also contains quick access to online Help.
• The People section shows you others that are actively viewing or editing the same file (with pictures if they have associated a Gravatar icon with their Syncplicity account email address). The People section will also let you switch to a newer version of the file, if someone else saves changes.
• The Settings section contains a Browse to My Syncplicity link, which will open My Syncplicity in your default browser directly to the location of the file, so you can access version history. A settings menu contains options to prevent popup notifications for advanced users, or even hide the entire App Tab. Of course, if you hide the App Tab entirely, you won’t know when other users are editing shared files. If you choose this option, you can re-enable the App Tab from the Syncplicity Settings dialog, which is accessible from the Windows taskbar.

A Quick Feature Tour of the App Tab

The App Tab works with any number of people viewing and editing the same file. In this guide, we’ll pretend that you and a coworker named Doug are working on a shared file.

Here, the App Tab shows that you are the only person viewing this file:

When someone else opens the same file, the App Tab shows a notification:

If you start making edits, your App Tab changes to a pencil icon to indicate that you changed the file:

And if someone else starts editing first, the App Tab will notify you with a lock icon, suggesting that you wait before making changes:

You can choose to wait until the other person saves their changes. Or you can both edit the file if you really need to. In that case, you will both get a warning that if you both save changes, you will create multiple conflicting versions of the file:

As with previous versions of Syncplicity, it’s not harmful to create conflicting versions, but it can be confusing to have extra conflict files show up in your shared folders. So the App Tab gives you the information you need to avoid creating these extra files by accident.

When someone else saves their changes, Syncplicity will sync the file as it normally does. The App Tab will let you know whenever a new version is ready. Simply click “Switch to this version” and your file will be updated to the newest available version:

Ah, you say, what if your colleague saves a new version while you are editing a previous version? No problem! If you have unsaved changes, and someone else saves a new version, the App Tab will offer to save your changes separately so no information is lost:

One more neat feature to mention: clicking “Browse to My Syncplicity” will open your browser to My Syncplicity, directly to the location of the file you’re editing! This will let you easily browse or restore other versions or branches of your file.

Windows Client 4.0.0

This is a major “4.0” release for Syncplicity! Internal changes in this release have been planned for several years, and set the stage for some great features we will be rolling out later this year. Companies can deploy a mix of old desktop clients with new desktop clients (on different computers, of course!), but there are plenty of changes to enjoy, and good reasons to upgrade.

• Recently-changed files will download first. Even if you are downloading a huge folder for the first time, Syncplicity will retrieve the most-recent files first, including changes made in a different sync folder while you’re in the middle of a sync. This is a huge improvement that will help you get your current and most important files quickly.
• Empty folders now sync, to help project teams set up folder structures before adding data. Create all the empty folders you want, and we’ll happily sync them!
• File and folder exclusions are handled more smoothly. If you re-include a folder or an entire file type that you had previously excluded, Syncplicity will start syncing those files again.
• The desktop client has improved handling of interruptions and corrupt files.
• We have made other improvements to the way downloads work, including:
  • Deleting or updating a file while downloading a version of the same file works more smoothly and quickly
  • Improved user experience and user feedback when downloading files
  • Fewer pauses during downloading
  • Major improvement to reporting sync status
  • Faster downloads and uploads
  • Less CPU intensive for most sync cases
• Windows only: The Send Logs command in the Settings screen now includes the Syncplicity database to help us diagnose difficult problems. The database contains more information about files, but no file content. Please make sure that you are comfortable with sending us this information when working with Support cases.
• Known Issues:
  • The first time you launch the 4.x desktop client, the application will spend some extra time preparing to sync. For a huge amount of files or a slow computer, this could take several minutes. This is not a bug: the application is looking across your existing sync folders to make sure there are no problems.
  • After installing the 4.x desktop client, downgrading to an older 3.x client on the same computer is not recommended, and may require a very long initial sync.

Windows Client 3.5.25 Hotfix

• Fixed a folder permissions issue in the previous release that prevented Windows from indexing files in Syncplicity folders.
• User permissions for Syncplicity folders are now set to the same permissions settings as your user profile folder.
• For users with standard permissions settings, this means that guest users or other users on your computer will be unable to see your Syncplicity folders unless you explicitly share with them.
