Excluding folders and files on Mac

You can exclude a synchronized folder or a specific subfolder, file, or file type.

Excluding a top-level folder by not synchronizing

To exclude a top-level folder by not synchronizing:

  1. Click on the Syncplicity icon then select Folders Owned by Me or Folders Owned by others, depending on the folder you want to exclude.
  2. Select the folder you want to exclude.
  3. Click Remove from this device. After a moment, a confirmation message displays indicating the folder is no longer being synchronized.

NOTE: Select Delete if you also want to delete the folder from your Syncplicity account. The folder is not deleted from any of your computers. If you are an owner of this folder, deleting the folder also deletes it for other users the folder has been shared with. If you are an editor or reader, the folder is not deleted for them.

Excluding a subfolder

To exclude a subfolder within a synchronized folder:

  1. Open Finder and browse to the folder you want to exclude.
  2. Ctrl+click or right-click on the folder.
  3. Select Exclude Folder.
  4. In the confirmation message, select Exclude to no longer synchronize the folder. Syncplicity will no longer synchronize or back up this folder.

NOTE: If you have an earlier release of the Mac operating system, you may see Syncplicity in the menu. In this case, select Syncplicity then select Exclude Folder.

Including an excluded file 

To add an excluded file from your synchronized folder:

NOTE: File names cannot contain the semi colon (:) character.

  1. Open Finder and navigate to the file.
  2. Right-click (or control+click) on the file.
  3. Select Include file.
    NOTE: If the file is in a folder that is in a folder that is excluded, you will receive a message that indicates you must include the folder. 

Excluding a file or file type

To exclude a synchronized file or a specific type of file:

  1. Open Finder and browse to the folder you want to exclude.
  2. Right-click (or Ctrl+click) on the folder.
  3. Select Exclude File. A popup window with the options to exclude this file only or exclude files of the same type.
  4. In the confirmation message, select Exclude to no longer synchronize the file. Syncplicity will no longer synchronize or back up this file

NOTE: In your desktop client settings, you can also exclude specific file types from being synchronized, such as .exe, .js, .mov, etc. Additionally, your administrator may have excluded specific file types. You can exclude additional file types; although, you cannot change the administrator's exclusions, see Configuring client settings.
